Xiaomi 18 Fold: What to know about Xiaomi’s new foldable

On September 7, 2026, Xiaomi announced the Xiaomi 18 Fold in China, its company’s first foldable with a wide, short shape, a change from the tall, narrow shape used on past Mix Fold models. The announcement came two days before Apple revealed its own foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, and in the same week as Huawei’s Mate XT2. 

If you are in Nigeria and want this phone, there is one thing to know first: Xiaomi has not announced a Nigerian or wider African release.

Xiaomi 18 Fold release date and availability

Xiaomi unveiled the 18 Fold on September 7, 2026. Sales in China began on September 10, with the entry model starting at CNY 10,999. The release currently covers China only. Xiaomi has not given an international launch date.

The timing matters, but you should separate an announcement from a phone reaching shops. Huawei also unveiled its Mate XT2 on September 7, with Chinese sales starting on September 12. Apple announced the iPhone Duo on September 9, but its preorders only open on October 16, and it goes on sale on October 23. If you are in Nigeria and want one now, you are looking at a China-market import. This usually means buying from an independent seller or arranging a purchase through a shipping service. 

Xiaomi 18 Fold price

Xiaomi sells the 18 Fold in four standard configurations, plus a Ceramic Special Edition. That gives you five options to pick from.

These dollar and naira figures use the rounded mid-market rates Wise showed on September 16, 2026: CNY 1 equals $0.1491 and ₦204.50. Dollar amounts are rounded to the nearest dollar, and naira amounts to the nearest ₦1,000.

These figures only show what Xiaomi’s China price converts to. A real Nigerian quote will likely add shipping, insurance, import charges, the seller’s margin, and a different exchange rate on the day. Xiaomi has not released an official Nigerian retail price yet.

According to launch coverage, the Ceramic Special Edition has a silicon nitride back and a production limit of 1,500 units. Check stock before you order this version.

Detailed specs

1. Design and durability

The phone measures 117.8 x 83.6 x 10.68mm closed and 117.8 x 163.8 x 5.02mm open. It weighs 219g. Xiaomi sells it in four finishes:

• Black
• Warm Gold White
• Xiye Red
• Pink, on the Ceramic Special Edition

In terms of construction, the phone uses:

• A three-link Dragon Bone hinge
• Dual-layer UTG glass on the folding screen
• A 7000-series aluminium frame
• IP58 and IP59 laboratory ratings, though Xiaomi excludes liquid-immersion damage from its warranty

Think about the shape before you buy. A short body can suit a smaller pocket, but 83.6mm closed is still a wide phone in your hand. A screen’s diagonal measurement alone will not tell you how it feels to hold or type on. If you can, try a similarly wide device first.

2. Display

• Cover screen, 5.38 inches AMOLED, 1712 x 1168 pixels
• Inner screen, 7.58 inches AMOLED, 2364 x 1672 pixels

Both screens run a 1 to 120Hz LTPO refresh rate and reach an advertised peak brightness of 4,000 nits.

Xiaomi describes the shape as close to standard A-series paper, which gives you a wide workspace when open. Remember, peak brightness isn’t a level the whole screen holds all the time.

3. Performance and software

Xiaomi’s own XRING O3 chip powers the 18 Fold. It uses a 3nm process with a 10-core CPU, a 16-core GPU and a four-core NPU built for on-device AI tasks.

Memory changes by storage tier. The 256GB and 512GB models use LPDDR5X, while the 1TB models use LPDDR6. All versions use UFS 4.1 storage. This means paying for 16GB of RAM alone doesn’t guarantee you get LPDDR6.

The phone ships with HyperOS 4. The spec sheet reviewed for this article names the interface but doesn’t state the underlying Android version. It also does not confirm the Android upgrade count, the security support end date, or full English-language support for the AI features. Treat those details as unconfirmed for now.

A chip’s specifications alone cannot tell you how the phone handles sustained gaming, heat, or battery life. Those need real testing on retail software. If you are choosing between memory tiers, weigh the extra storage against the price gap and the apps you actually use.

4. Multitasking and foldable features

HyperOS 4 supports two-app, three-app, and six-app screen arrangements, swipe gestures, and floating windows. Xiaomi also built in a desktop-style WPS mode for office work.

A useful example is keeping a reference document open beside an email draft, or comparing a quotation with a spreadsheet. That shows what the split-screen space can do. It does not mean every Nigerian banking, office, or messaging app has been optimised for this phone.

Xiaomi also promotes a smooth switch between the outer and inner displays. Check whether your most-used apps keep their layout and position when you switch screens on the software version being sold.

Xiaomi’s Super Xiao Ai “Inspiration Ball” assistant is due for an update in late September 2026, and this is subject to change. Do not assume it works today.

5. Camera

• 200MP f/1.7 main camera, with optical stabilisation
• 50MP f/2.4 ultrawide camera
• 50MP f/2.8 periscope telephoto, with optical stabilisation, 3.5x optical zoom and 7x sensor-based zoom
• 16MP f/2.2 front camera, supporting 1080p video at 60fps

The rear cameras record video up to 8K at 24fps or 4K at 60fps.

The dedicated telephoto lens looks useful on paper for portraits and distant subjects. Note that the 7x figure is sensor-based magnification, not a separate 7x optical lens. Megapixel counts alone cannot tell you how the phone handles low light, skin tones, or moving subjects.

6. Battery and charging

The 18 Fold has a 6,000mAh silicon-carbon battery with 20% silicon content. It supports 67W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. Xiaomi includes an adapter in the box, though you need extra compatible equipment to reach the top wireless speed.

Confirm the adapter and wireless charging costs before you import this phone. Battery capacity is only one part of how long a charge lasts. Screen brightness, network signal, gaming, and time spent on the larger display all affect it. No independent battery test result is claimed in this article.

Xiaomi does not list eSIM support for this model.

These specifications give you details to check with your mobile operator. They do not confirm that every Nigerian network feature, including 5G and voice over LTE, works on this exact China-market unit. Ask for a live demonstration on your network before you buy.

How the Xiaomi 18 Fold compares

The Galaxy Z Fold8 and the iPhone Duo are the two closest rivals in this wider foldable category. The table below uses each brand’s published specifications.

Samsung’s page separates the standard Fold8 shown here from the Fold8 Ultra, and Apple’s playback claim cannot be compared directly against a battery figure in milliamp-hours.

Samsung has the lowest weight of the three. Xiaomi has a dedicated telephoto camera and the largest stated battery of the two Android models here. Apple brings a different operating system and app ecosystem, though its October 23 release date is still weeks away. These differences give you a shortlist to work from. They do not settle which phone wins on photography or battery life.

What this means for Nigerian buyers

At the checked exchange rate, the entry model already costs about ₦2.25 million before an importer adds their own charges. Get a written total that covers delivery, any import charges and the seller’s return policy. A currency conversion alone cannot tell you what a shop in Lagos or Abuja will actually charge you.

Pay as much attention to software as you do to hardware. The China launch materials reviewed for this article do not confirm full Google service compatibility for use in Nigeria. Ask the seller to show you Google sign-in, Play Store access, notifications and the specific apps you rely on working. Google explains how to check Play Protect certification under the Play Store’s Settings and About menu, and a Play Store icon on the screen is not proof on its own.

For network access, confirm the exact model with your operator and check coverage where you live and work. MTN says its 5G service needs a compatible device, a 4G-enabled SIM, and 5G coverage in your area. A seller saying a phone “supports 5G” isn’t enough proof that it works on your specific network.

Warranty is the other big question before you pay. Xiaomi’s Nigerian terms generally limit after-sales service to the country where you bought the phone, unless another agreement applies. An imported China unit needs a clear repair plan. Find out who handles repairs, where the phone goes, and who pays for shipping. It is unclear whether replacement screens, hinges, and batteries are available locally for this model.

Xiaomi also advises using its own service team to replace the inner screen protector. Confirm you have a local option for that too.

The Xiaomi 18 Fold offers a compact folding design, a dedicated zoom camera, and a large battery. For a Nigerian buyer, its real value depends on the final delivered price and whether the seller can show you working software, reliable network access, and a clear repair route. Get those answers before you pay.
